History

The Jamaica Federation of Musicians Union was established in January of 1958 and registered under the Trade Union Laws of Jamaica.

Prior to its first constitution of 1957-58, Mr. Luther Williams (deceased) served as President 1955-56 and Mr. Seymour Mullings 1956-57.

Among the Union's quotes aims and objects are the promotion of live music, the improvement of musical talent, improvement of working conditions and protection of the interest of all its members, to establish and maintain uniform and fair prices for musicians and artistes services, to help defray costs in consequence of death of financial members, to provide funds for old age grants, sick benefits, schools and other educational facilities and institutions for the use, and catering to the needs of proponents of the musical art.

The Jamaica Federation of Musicians Union is not a booking agency but operates similarly to other entertainment organizations. Members obtain their own engagements through agents or in their own capacity as professional artistes. However, the Federation will obtain for members - working conditions and wage scales and other pre-requisities which may be negotiated with employers in the industry.

The Federation is divided into Three (3) Locals:- Cornwall/Montego Bay, Middlesex/Ocho Rios, Surrey/Kingston.

At present the total membership of our Union is over 2,000 members which includes male and female musicians, artistes and performers who hold either full membership, affiliated membership, life or honorary membership.
